The Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) belongs to the group of the antioxidant vitamins, together with the Vitamins A and E. It is the main non enzymatic hydro soluble antioxidant of the skin. It plays an important role in the regeneration of the alpha tocopherol, an active form of the vitamin E, as well as a cofactor in the hydroxylation of the procollagen. It stimulates the synthesis of the collagen activating its transcriptional regulating effector gene. It intervenes in the synthesis of important elements of the extracellular matrix of the conjunctive tissue as well as in the activation of peptidic hormones and in the catabolism of tyrosine. It is an effective whitening agent and it also has antioxidant and turgid effects in the connective tissue.
